project background

During my Spring 2022 semester at USC, I took a Social Innovation Design Lab course where I worked in a team of three to utilize human-centered design and design thinking methodologies to create a solution that addresses an issue faced by the active older adults (ages 60+) community.

our process & focus

As part of the project, my team and I participated in brainstorming sessions to develop “how might we”, problem, and opportunity statements, rapid prototyping sessions, and multiple rounds of user interviews to uncover user pain points and develop a solution that best addressed a need expressed by our user.

In our initial conversations with older adults, we identified that a significant number experienced feelings of loneliness during and after the pandemic, and found it challenging to maintain regular connections with their families. As a result, our team narrowed our focus to improving intergenerational connections, leading us to develop the following opportunity statement:

"We reinvent the landscape of intergenerational communication by creating collective memories for grandparents and grandkids to share because age and distance shouldn’t get in the way of kinship."

our findings

As a group, we conducted a total of 105 interviews with our two user groups — older adults and college students — and uncovered the following insights:

For older adults:

For college students:

The Logify Project

In recognizing these key insights from our user interviews, our team developed The Logify Project to directly address these needs.

The Logify Project is an automated text messaging service targeted towards older adults who are grandparents and college-aged grandchildren. This service prompts grandchildren 3x a week to share updates through photos and captions. These responses are compiled into a monthly newspaper summarizing their activities, then delivered physically to grandparents in a photo-based newsletter format that can also be digitally downloadable from the Logify website. The service aims to foster intergenerational connections by facilitating authentic communication between grandparents and college-aged grandchildren.

The Logify Project was developed in direct response to users' identified needs, focusing on minimizing effort for college students and simplifying the process of sending and receiving updates on their grandchildren's lives. For college students, Logify eliminates the need for downloading additional applications or regular social media logins. By simply responding to prompts with pictures from their camera rolls, they can share updates that will be automatically compiled for them on the backend. For grandparents, Logify streamlines connection through a familiar physical, photo-based newsletter format, addressing concerns about bothering their grandchildren by eliminating the need for outreach on their end.

In short, Logify was designed as a means of maximizing service convenience and value for both target users, to not only foster regular connection between both generations, but also spark conversations to be continued instead of started at family gatherings.
